ChatGPT: Who is Mira Murati and why she believes AI should be regulated

The chatbot’s launch and its subsequent popularity also triggered a battle among Big Tech companies to unveil their own AI chatbots.

While Microsoft integrated its Bing with ChatGPT and also launched a new version of its Edge browser with new AI features built-in, Google was quick to unveil ChatGPT rival called Bard.

Meanwhile, Chinese tech giant Baidu announced its own AI chatbot called Ernie.

However, experts are now raising concerns over the dangers associated with these chatbots and said that the tech “can be misused”.

”[AI] can be misused, or it can be used by bad actors. So, then there are questions about how you govern the use of this technology globally. How do you govern the use of AI in a way that’s aligned with human values?” she said in an interview with Time magazine.

Murati added that AI should be regulated by the governments.

It’s important for OpenAI and companies like ours to bring this into the public consciousness in a way that’s controlled and responsible. But we’re a small group of people and we need a ton more input in this system and a lot more input that goes beyond the technologies-—definitely regulators and governments and everyone else, she said.

Asked if government involvement can slow innovation, she said, “it’s not too early. It’s very important for everyone to start getting involved, given the impact these technologies are going to have.”

Who is Mira Murati?

Born in 1988 in San Francisco to Indian-origin parents, she has done her Bachelor of Engineering from Thayer School of Engineering at Dartmouth. She joined OpenAI in June 2018 and worked as the SVP of Research, Product & Partnerships at the company. She was promoted to her current role in May 2022.

She has previously worked with Goldman Sachs, Zodiac Aerospace, and Tesla.
