OpenAI CEO and ChatGPT creator Sam Altman, who is in India this week, will speak at the India Institute of Technology (IIT Delhi) today, June 8, according to media reports. He will also meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday.
“Excited to visit Israel, Jordan, Qatar, the UAE, India and South Korea this week!” the OpenAI CEO tweeted a few days ago.
Addressing an event hosted by The Economic Times on Wednesday, Altman said countries such as India should back research on artificial intelligence in ways that can improve government services like health care.
“The main thing that I think is important is figuring out how to integrate these technologies into other services. And that is an area that I think governments are behind on, and don’t have the answers yet,” he said.
He stated that India, which currently holds the presidency of the group of industrialized and emerging economies known as the G20, can play a major role in shaping global AI regulations, Bloomberg reported.
“I don’t think current AI systems are dangerous. GPT4 doesn’t pose an existential risk, but GPT4 might be a completely different thing,” Sam Altman added.
On the issue of technology behind fake videos, Altman said, “There’s a lot of fear right now, about the impact this (technology) is going to have on our elections and our society. There is some fear, but as a society, we are going to rise to the occasion.”
Apart from this, Altman also said that this is the most exciting time to start a company since the dawn of the internet. Asked if Indian startups can compete with bigger players like OpenAI, he said that in the short term, there is too much of a frenzy around AI, but it’s very under-hyped in the long term.
India is the latest stop for Altman on his world tour, and he is scheduled to meet with PM Modi and other government officials. He will be in South Korea on June 9.
