This crash is the third instance this season of the 24-year-old retiring when leading a race.

He let out a scream of anger to his team after spinning into the wall, and shouted ‘I cannot go to full throttle!’

His rival for the World Championship title Max Verstappen asked ‘is he alright?’ over the radio, and was told ‘yes, I am told he is OK.’

The crash has left Verstappen in the lead in France, and a win for the Red Bull driver could be instrumental in the Drivers Championship.

He is currently being chased by Lewis Hamilton in second, with his teammate Sergio Peres close behind in third.

Leclerc’s teammate Carlos Sainz has moved into third after overtaking George Russell.
