Charles Leclerc recovered from a spin to take pole position for the Spanish Grand Prix from title rival Max Verstappen.
The championship leader spun on his first effort in the final part of qualifying, but set a blistering lap to take pole by over three tenths to Verstappen who reported a loss of power on his final lap.
Mercedes looked stronger after bringing upgrades to Barcelona but still found themselves behind their rivals with George Russell in fourth and Lewis Hamilton in sixth.
