Chargers save $40million in cap space after restructuring the contracts of Mack, Bosa, & Allen
Los Angeles Chargers save $40million in salary cap space after restructuring the contracts of Khalil Mack, Joey Bosa, Keenan Allen and Mike Williams
The Los Angeles Chargers were able to fix their salary cap issues without having to release any key players after restructuring the contracts of four of the most expensive deals on their books.
LA restructured the deals of superstar edge rushers Joey Bosa and Khalil Mack, along with star wide receivers Keenan Allen and Mike Williams in order to create $40.37 million salary cap space.
Before restructuring each player would have carried a salary cap hit of over $32 million. Williams would have carried the cheapest hit of $32.4m, while Allen’s was set for $34.7m, Bosa’s would have been $36.6m, and Mack’s would have been the most expensive at $38.5m.
The team entered the offseason $20.5 million over the salary cap limit which led to countless rumors that some of their most talented players may be released to free up money.

Stellar receivers Keenan Allen(L) and Mike Willams also restructured their expensive deals
According to ESPN’s Field Yates the moves will now give the Chargers at $19 million in salary cap space before the start of the league year on Wednesday.
Despite the newly secured cap space LA is not expected to resign starting safety Nasir Adderly or linebacker Drue Tranquill, as both of whom are headed for free agency.
The team is still expected to make an attempt to re-sign right tackle Trey Pipkins III, however.
More importantly the Chargers will soon have to focus on extending the contract of quarterback Justin Herbert as he prepares to enter the fourth season of his five-year rookie contract.
Herbert has shined as one of the NFL’s brightest young quarterbacks and is all but certain to command a massive deal that will be near the top of the QB market.
In each of his first three seasons in the league Herbert has thrown for more than 4,000 yards, at least 25 touchdowns, and no more than 15 interceptions.
Retaining his top two wideouts will all but certainly help him continue to grow on those numbers and increase his value the longer that the Chargers wait to re-sign him.
