Fans have joked that Chelsea are preparing for next season after the Champions League anthem failed to play ahead of their quarter-final second leg tie with Real Madrid.
The players lined up ahead of kick-off, though the customary Champions League anthem, an adaptation of Handel’s Zadok the Priest from the Coronation Anthems, failed to ring out.
The likes of Kai Havertz, Luka Modric and Thiago Silva stood there with a look of bemusement etched across their face as the BT Sport commentator Darren Fletcher joked that someone inside the ground had failed to turn the speakers on.
Supporters on social media saw the funny side of the odd incident, with some joking that the club were preparing for next season. They currently sit 11th in the Premier League, 17 points off the top four pace.

Echoing that sentiment, another user wrote: ‘They forgot to play the champions league anthem cos they know it’s over.’
Facing Real Madrid, already 2-0 down, is considered by many in football to be among the most daunting of prospects.
The Spanish giants are the reigning European champions, and have triumphed in the competition 14 times in all.

Referencing their superiority over many in Europe, one fan suggested the tactic was a ploy not to ‘awaken the beast’.
‘No CL anthem at Stamford Bridge. Is this some tactic by Chelsea not to awaken the beast,’ they joked.
