Chelsea captain Cesar Azpilicueta has been discharged from hospital after suffering a concussion in a horror collision against Southampton.

The 33-year-old is believed to have been unconscious after Southampton substitute Sekou Mara attempted to volley the ball but only booted Azpilicueta in the face.

Azpilicueta needed oxygen as he was treated by medics from both teams for nearly 10 minutes on the pitch.

The defender was eventually taken off on a stretcher, wearing a neck brace, and was kept at the hospital for further tests over the last few days.

The Spain international did, however, post a positive update of him giving a thumbs up while smiling while he underwent tests in hospital.

Azpilicueta has now been discharged and was captured back at Chelsea’s Cobham training ground today, albeit he did not take part in any activities.

He was even pictured enjoying a drink alongside boss Graham Potter during the first-team training session.

Chelsea posted a short-statement, which read: ‘Following a concussion injury sustained during Saturday’s game against Southampton, Cesar Azpilicueta has been discharged from hospital and is recovering well at Cobham.

‘The club’s medical team are closely monitoring Cesar’s condition, adhering to the important concussion protocols in place to ensure his safety.

‘Cesar observed training today, before he starts working towards returning to the pitch.’

Azpilicueta will remain sidelined for the time being, but boss Graham Potter will be hoping to have the defender back at his disposal in the coming weeks, as they continue to try turn their fortunes around.

James Ward-Prowse’s goal gave Southampton a 1-0 win at Stamford Bridge, condemning Chelsea to their second loss in a week following the defeat to Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League.

The Blues currently sit 10th in the Premier League after a miserable campaign so far and an even worse run of form of late.

They face a trip away to London rivals Tottenham Hotspur next up on Sunday afternoon.
