Celtic hero Sutton takes aim at Rangers’ Robertson over fan split for Old Firm clashes
CELTIC hero Chris Sutton has hit out after Rangers managing director Stewart Robertson’s comments on fan allocations for Glasgow derbies.
The Parkhead hero slammed the news that there doesn’t appear to be any change in the smaller visiting supporter sections at both Ibrox and Celtic Park.
No away fans were present for the match between he clubs at Ibrox in August and it’s set to be the same scenario in February with an all-home crowd for the match.
However, after a return to normality in allocations, it’s expected around 700 to 800 fans from either side can land tickets to the away matches.
But Sutton has blasted the situation as he insisted derbies between the rivals are only improved by having “6000 away fans”.
And in a dig at Robertson, Sutton called out the Ibrox chief as he claimed he “limits away fans when our game is worse for it” while saying Scottish football “sells itself short”.
Posting on Twitter, Sutton wrote: “What a sad state of affairs.
“The game whether at Ibrox or Celtic Park is a much better atmosphere and watch with 6000 away fans.
“This is a guy who says Scottish football sells itself short and then limits away fans when our game is worse for it.”
Robertson had explained the circumstances surrounding the allocations for Old Firm matches in an appearance on The Athletic Football podcast.
He said: “About 800 fans from either side now go to games but I don’t think there will be in a couple of weeks because of where Covid was at the time.
“We had a red zone and there were no away fans in.
“The challenge is changing that at the moment because both teams have sold season tickets in those areas and actually it is ‘how do you change that back?’
“Those supporters have renewal rights so it is not something I see changing in the short term. The vast majority of our fans don’t want it to change, they are comfortable with it.
“I don’t know how it is on the other section of the city but certainly from our supporters’ perspective they are comfortable with it the way it is.
“The vast majority, I would be lying if I said everybody.”
