Celebrate Spooky Season With the #VogueBeautyHalloween Challenge

The black cat is out of the bag! Heading into its third year, Vogue’s #VogueBeautyHalloween challenge—the annual event inviting beauty lovers and top talent to show off their most head-turning Halloween transformations—is back. And given the hype has heightened with every passing spooky season, it will be a bigger spectacle than ever before.

Each year, the theater of Halloween takes many forms. Some go the icon route, embodying their favorite celebrity or performer down to every last doppelgänger detail. Case in point: To help Vogue announce this year’s challenge, hairstylist Chris Appleton put on some blue suede shoes to become Elvis, inspired by Baz Luhrmann’s larger-than-life musical biopic. “Elvis is one of the most iconic singers of all time, and the movie really brought it to life,” says Appleton, who utilized his pro skills to craft The King’s signature jet-black pompadour above a trio of dazzling costumes. “I was inspired by his looks and fashion.” In the true spirit of Halloween, others may unveil looks that will make your blood run cold—or inspire you to dance with the dark side. (Perhaps a more gruesome corpse bride or a brain-eating zombie is calling your name this year.) Of course, you can’t go wrong with one of the season’s supernatural mainstays, such as a wickedly chic witch or a bloodthirsty vampire with fangs and a dripping crimson lip.

Beginning today, you can use the hashtag #VogueBeautyHalloween to join in on the fun. On October 31, Vogue’s editors will choose the top looks to be featured on Vogue.com and Vogue’s social media. It’s time to transform—and remember: “It’s the one time of year anything goes,” as Appleton says. “You can be as creative as your heart desires.”
