CBS Sports president addresses Tony Romo ‘intervention’ reports

On Friday, CBS Sports president Sean McManus responded to reports that an “intervention” was held with Tony Romo last offseason regarding his improvement, or lack-there-of, in the broadcast booth.

A guest on SiriusXM’s “Mad Dog Unleashed,” McManus denied the report, adding that meeting with on-air talent isn’t uncommon, nor an indictment on Romo’s performance.

“The thought that there is some kind of story behind the fact that I sat down with Tony to talk about how he can get better is just inaccurate,” McManus said via SI.com’s Jimmy Traina.

Romo has recently faced criticism for less-than-stellar performances during broadcasts, especially in this year’s AFC title game. McManus admitted that Romo could improve but called the complaints against him “overplayed,” confirming that the network likes him because he doesn’t fit the mold of typical color analysts.

This week, seemingly tired of the uproar, Romo commented, “You can’t please everyone.”

Earlier this month, a report emerged that CBS executives visited Romo last offseason to try an “intervention” after the former quarterback appeared unprepared during games. CBS quickly responded to the report, alleging a “mischaracterization” of the meeting.

In 2020, Romo signed a 10-year deal with CBS paying him $17.5 million a season. The former Cowboys signal-caller had a promising start to his second career, but over time, the quality has dipped significantly. Once lauded for his quick wit and ability to call out plays on a whim, Romo has quickly fallen out of favor with NFL fans. Whether or not he improves and gets fans back on his side is up to him.
