Despite his quick and steep fall from grace, Carson Wentz isn’t ready to call it quits yet.
According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, Wentz is determined to continue his career and is open to “various roles” to prove his worth to a team.
Wentz is seemingly hinting that he’d be content competing for a backup role, which probably wasn’t the case when he joined the Indianapolis Colts and Washington Commanders.
Wherever Wentz lands, he’ll be suiting up for his third team in as many seasons, having fallen out of favor with the Philadelphia Eagles, Colts and now Commanders.
Even though Wentz has seen his play decline, there’s always a market for quarterbacks in the NFL, and the former No. 2 overall pick should have plenty of suitors. Per OddsChecker, the Kansas City Chiefs (+300) have the best chances to sign Wentz, followed by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (+400), who are rumored to be interested in bringing Wentz aboard to push would-be-starter Kyle Trask.
Last season, Wentz played in only eight games for the Washington Commanders, limited after surgery to repair a fractured finger before losing his starting job to Taylor Heinicke. Wentz had an uninspiring year, throwing for 1,755 yards with 11 touchdowns and nine interceptions, finishing 30th (32.9) in the NFL in QBR. Unsurprisingly, the Commanders cut bait on Wentz, releasing him on Feb. 27.
Usually, when a quarterback struggles, many suggest a change of scenery as the remedy. However, Wentz has had two opportunities at fresh starts, squandering both. Perhaps expectations are to blame, and maybe a backup job is what Wentz needs to get right. Regardless, an NFL team will give Wentz another shot, and it will likely be his last.
