What is The Zone of Interest about?
The film is a loose adaptation of the book The Zone of Interest, authored by Martin Amis. The author passed away on May 19, 2023, the same day the movie was screened at Cannes.
The Zone of Interest tells the story of Auschwitz concentration camp commandant Rudolf Hoss and his wife and children, who live right next to the torture chamber. While the camp had people being tortured and killed, Hoss and his family built their dream home next door. The horrors happening right next to them – the gunshots, killing, and screams of prisoners from the gas chambers – mean nothing to them, or at least they pretend not to be worried.
What else did Glazer say about The Zone of Interest?
Glazer also wrote the film. He said that it was a challenge to tackle the subject. “This is not something I planned. It’s an ever-evolving journey. I certainly have had the subject in mind for many years.”For his research, Glazer read a lot about the Holocaust and the survivors, and he also visited Auschwitz, which was a “profound trip” for him. Talking about the wall that ran round the camp, he said that it became a “manifestation of what we tell ourselves”, adding that human beings “compartmentalize for our own convenience”. Recently, there has been a rise in anti-Semitic sentiments and neo-Nazism, to which the director said that his film is trying to talk about the “human capacity for violence”.
He added that trying to show the Nazis “as people and not as monsters was a very important thing to do because the great crime and tragedy is that human beings did this to other human beings”.
