Canberra blanketed in hail as cool change replaces weekend heatwave

Hail and icy showers across Canberra, the Illawarra, and NSW south coast were a world away from the weekend’s steamy weather.

A steamy weekend in Canberra was quickly put on ice this morning thanks to a snap cool change that dusted the nation’s capital in hail.

Two days of sunny skies and above-average temperatures were replaced by a deep chill on Monday as a cold front moved up from the south, bringing with it icy showers and localised hail.

The Bureau of Meteorology received reports of hailstones falling across Canberra, the Illawarra and NSW south coast.

NSW and ACT meteorologist Hugh McDowell said the frigid air mass put paid to the weekend’s warm weather after riding a cold front into town.

“It’s airy cold air with what we call low freezing level, which allows us to have this really wintry conditions, showers, showers with hail in them,” Mr McDowell said.

“There’s a few thunderstorms about too”

Temperatures in Canberra went as low as -1 degree in the early morning and only managed a high of 11.6 degrees, having topped 21 degrees the previous two days. The average daily high for Canberra in September is 16.2 degrees.

Mr McDowell said Monday’s cold snap was fairly typical for the region in early spring.

He tipped a few more showers on Monday, but the forecast should brighten over the coming days through to the weekend.
