Wednesday’s NHL Draft will be a night that David Reinbacher will always remember, but for Carey Price the night will always be defined by forgetfulness.
The Canadiens goaltender was tasked with announcing 18-year-old Reinbacher as the fifth overall pick, but just couldn’t remember the Austrian’s name on stage in Nashville.
‘Les Canadiens de Montreal are proud to select, David…,’ Price said before a long silence and awkward laugh as he realized his memory was failing him.
A fan even screamed out Reinbacher’s last name to try and help, but it wasn’t until Canadiens GM Kent Hughes grabbed the mic that the pick was formally announced.
‘We planned it that way,’ Hughes joked. ‘David Reinbacher.’

Regardless of how the news was delivered, Reinbacher looked pleased as he posed for a picture with NHL commissioner Gary Bettman.
Reinbacher became the highest-drafted Austrian defenseman in NHL Draft history with the selection.
Elsewhere in the draft, Conor Bedard was selected by the Chicago Blackhawks No. 1 overall as expected.
The 17-year-old Bedard is the second No. 1 pick in franchise history, joining Patrick Kane.
