Callum McGregor tells Celtic to put on a show worthy of legend Bertie Auld

CALLUM MCGREGOR has urged his Celtic teammates to pay a fitting tribute to club legend Bertie Auld by putting on a show at Hampden today.

Celtic take on St Johnstone this evening in the League Cup semi-final at the national stadium, their first match since Lisbon Lion Auld passed away earlier this week at the age of 83.

The Celtic players will wear the number 10 on their shorts in homage to the club legend, but McGregor believes that the most fitting tribute of all would be for the team to put on a show that entertains the fans Auld loved so much.

“It’s a lovely gesture from the club [putting the number 10 on the players’ shorts]” McGregor said. “It’s our job then on Saturday to make a tribute that’s fitting of Bertie both in terms of performance and result.

“It will be a nice little reminder just before kick-off that we need to do it for him as well.

“He was an absolute giant of the club. He achieved so much for it.”

McGregor says he is grateful to Auld for the impact he had on him as a Celtic player throughout the years, not only by his own example from his playing days, but in his readiness to offer advice to the youth prospects at the club.

“He was a real role model and an inspiration for the young guys like myself when we were coming through the system,” he said.

“He would often be chatting to you about the standards around the place, what the expectation is when you play for Celtic, how it all comes together.

“He was just always somebody who could put a smile on your face no matter what you were talking to him about.

“He would always try and help you and he certainly did that.”

*Callum McGregor was speaking at a Premier Sports Cup event promoting Celtic v St Johnstone, live from 4.45pm on Premier Sports on Saturday 20th November. Premier Sports is available on Sky, Virgin TV and the Premier Player.
