Rugby Union side Caldy have come to the rescue of rugby league hopefuls North Wales Crusaders after they were left without a home ground for their big Challenge Cup tie with Hunslet this weekend.

Caldy, currently second in National League One, play across the River Dee from Wales on the Wirral peninsula.

Yet they responded to an urgent cross-code appeal from the Crusaders who have been left without a ground for their fourth round cup clash.

Crusaders usually play their home games at Stadium Eirias in Colwyn Bay but share the ground with RGC, the representative union side of North Wales rugby and Wales U20s, who are scheduled to face France and Italy in their Six Nations fixtures there next month.

As a consequence, to protect the pitch, BetFred League One side Crusaders were told to find another venue for their crunch Challenge Cup game.

An appeal was sent out to various clubs in the North Wales region before they approached English union side Caldy who agreed to let them use their Paton Field ground overlooking the River Dee as they are playing away at Tonbridge in Kent this Saturday.

A relieved Crusaders chief executive Andy Moulsdale said: ‘We’d like to thank Caldy for their fantastic support with hosting our Challenge Cup tie.

‘After a brilliant win at Swinton, we’ve had to face some challenges with this tie, but I hope all our supporters understand the position we’ve found ourselves in.

‘Unfortunately, we couldn’t hold the match in Colwyn Bay because of the other events already pencilled in at the stadium over this upcoming period.

‘We’ve been speaking to numerous stadiums in the North Wales area, but it’s been a real challenge because of the short notice and with other sports currently in the middle of their season.

‘The date and time we’ve set are based on Caldy’s availability and it would be fantastic to see a strong crowd follow us to Wirral.

‘Last season was one of the greatest for the club and we’ve had a solid start to 2022 so this Challenge Cup tie with Hunslet is another massive one as we look to make it to the fifth round.’

Caldy vice president Jon Bagley said: ‘Everybody at Caldy is delighted to welcome the North Wales Crusaders to Paton Field.

‘It’s a real shame that the Crusaders can’t continue their cup run at Colwyn Bay but hopefully the fantastic views across the Dee will spur them on.

‘It would be fantastic if the Caldy faithful, not on the road to Tonbridge, could join our North Wales friends.’

Entry to the cup tie is £10, with U16s allowed in free of charge. Kick off on Saturday is at 2pm.
