Calcutta HC puts interim stay on rustication of three Visva Bharati University students

Calcutta High Court gives interim stay on Wednesday on rustication of three students by Visva Bharati University for three years. The protesting students have been asked to lift the agitation and the University authority has been directed to allow the three rusticated students to join classes from tomorrow.

The court observed that action taken by the VBU against the three students was not justified. The bench also directed the students to end the demonstration and asked the University officials to allow the three students to continue their classes.

The bench also directed the students to end agitation immediately. The next date for hearing is on September 15.

The Calcutta High Court last Friday had ordered that the university students protesting outside Visva-Bharati University Vice-Chancellor Bidyut Chakraborty’s residence inside the campus to immediately vacate the area and allow University staffers to enter his house.

The Calcutta High Court ordered Santiniketan Police Station to immediately remove the blockades created by the protesters for the last seven days and make the entrance free. The Court also observed that the students must not protest within 50 metres of the VC’s residence.

Three constables were deputed in front of VC’s house and locks of the eastern gate have been broken by the police officials to lift any kind of hindrance to the VC’s residence. The court also ordered that the CCTV cameras inside the campus should be made active and mike cannot be used inside the premises.
