Burnley’s pre-season ‘friendly’ with Real Betis turns into CHAOS as both teams have a player sent off and Marc Bartra nets an equaliser from his OWN HALF which goes in off the crossbar and the back of James Trafford’s head
- Jordan Beyer opened the scoring after poking in at the back post for Burnley
- Luiz Felipe and Johann Gudmundsson clashed and were sent off before the half
- Marc Bartra scored an incredible equaliser for Real Betis from his own half
There was two red cards and a goal from the half-way line in a chaotic pre-season friendly involving Burnley and Real Betis.
Vincent Kompany’s side picked up a positive result in Spain as the Premier League new boys held Betis – who will participate in this season’s Europa League – to a 1-1 draw.
It was the Clarets who took the lead after 26 minutes when Jordan Beyer poked home at the far post, but the game sparked into life before half time in a match which was anything but friendly.
Burnley midfielder Johann Gudmundsson was left unhappy with a challenge from Betis’ Luiz Felipe, who lunged in from behind on the Icelandic international.
Gudmundsson appeared to kick out in Felipe’s direction, before the Betis player rushed back and looked to headbutt his opponent before pushing him away by the neck. The referee decided that the clash was enough to send both players off – reducing both teams to ten men.
Just when it looked that nothing could beat the double red card for levels of madness in a pre-season friendly, Marc Bartra scored an exceptional goal from inside his own half to equalise for Betis.
The former Barcelona and Borussia Dortmund defender appeared to catch James Trafford off guard, and the shot went in off the back of the crossbar onto the back of the keeper’s head before going into the net.
If Trafford felt bad for the nature of Betis’ equaliser he would make up for it with some great saves including from Aitor Ruibal to keep the Spanish side out.
Despite chances for both sides it finished as a 1-1 draw, a positive result for Burnley in Spain after they beat Portuguese champions Benfica 2-0 in Lisbon earlier this week.
