Bundesliga: Bayern Munich clinch 11th consecutive title in dramatic style after Dortmund’s draw against Mainz

Bayern Munich clinched their 11th consecutive title in dramatic style in the Bundesliga on Saturday, May 27 after Borussia Dortmund’s failure to win was coupled with their 2-1 win over FC Koln. Dortmund were clinching the title in the 89th minute of the contest before Jamal Musiala scored the winner for Bayern Munich against Koln while Dortmund drew 2-2. Dortmund came into the matchday with their fate in their own hands, but instead handed Bayern their 11th title in a row and failed to break their supremacy in the league.

What happened on the final day?

Needing to match Bayern Munich’s result, Dortmund had their fate in their own hands but miserably bottled the league title. In the 15th minute of the contest, Andreas Hanche-Olsen scored for Mainz to give them a 1-0 lead. That lead could have lasted for just four minutes before Sebastien Haller missed a penalty and failed to bring back Dortmund into the contest. The lead was soon doubled for Mainz as Karim Onisiwo scored for Mainz and handed the title initiative to Bayern.

Bayern had also taken a 1-0 lead against Koln at halftime as Kingsley Coman scored for the record champions. At half time, it was Bayern Munich who had the title in their hands before a dramatic second half followed.

In the 69th minute of the Dortmund game, Raphaël Guerreiro scored for Dortmund to make it 1-2 but the title still was in Munich’s hand as they lead 1-0 against Koln. At that moment, Bayern had 71 points while Dortmund were on 70 points.

Drama in the final 10 minutes

With nine minutes remaining, Dortmund were thrown a lifeline as a VAR call came in favour of Koln and saw a penalty awarded to them. Dejan Ljubicic converted from the 12 yards which saw the pendulum swing in Dortmund’s favour. At that moment, Bayern’s draw saw Dortmund clinch the title. However, an 89th-minute winner from Jamal Musiala saw them win the contest 2-1 while Dortmund’s late rescue act saw them pull the affairs at 2-2 against Mainz.

However, the set of results was not enough for Dortmund as both teams ended with 71 points each from 34 matches, and a superior goal difference (+54) saw them clinch the Bundesliga title for the 11th consecutive time.
