Buccaneers ‘are expected to release Cameron Brate’ as Tampa Bay tries to fix salary cap nightmare
Buccaneers ‘are expected to release Cameron Brate’ as Tampa Bay tries to fix nightmare salary cap situation as franchise sits $55m over threshold with tampering window approaching
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are expected to release veteran tight end Cameron Brate as they look to desperately clear salary cap space, according to reports.
Tampa Bay is currently $55million above the salary cap and the team is expected to make several moves in order to be under the threshold by March 13 at 4pm ET, reports ESPN.
Brate’s release will clear his $5m cap charge and comes on the heels of the Buccaneers’ decision to release running back Leonard Fournette, which will save about $3.5m in cap space.
Brate has been one of the longest tenured players on the Buccaneers roster and has recorded 273 passes for 2,857 yards and 33 TDs.
He struggled due to injuries last season and ended up having some of the lowest numbers of his career as a result.

Brate struggled with injuries this year and was carted off in Week 7 with a sprained neck
Brate suffered a concussion in Week 4 against the Kansas City Chiefs.
After returning in Week 6 he was again injured when he suffered a sprained neck against the Carolina Panthers and was carted off the field.
He missed a total of six regular season games in 2022 and caught only 20 passes for 174 yards.
The 31-year-old veteran’s last catch as a Buccaneer ended up being the last touchdown pass thrown in Tom Brady’s legendary career.
Brate seemed to be open to the idea of leaving after Tampa Bay were eliminated from the playoffs by the Dallas Cowboys.
‘I’ll look back on my time very fondly with the Bucs,’ Brate said postgame.
‘It was awesome. An awesome ride. It’s been great.’
He will always be remembered for catching the final touchdown pass of Tom Brady’s career
