Bryson DeChambeau admitted he is still only ’80 per cent fit’ as he battles through the worst slump of his career.
The much-hyped American, fourth in the world this time last year, is in danger of falling outside the top 20 if his poor record at Augusta continues this week.
‘I’ve been struggling with a bone fracture in my hand and a torn hip ligament that has really impacted my swing but I’m on the way back,’ said the 28 year old, who missed seven weeks of the season in February and March before returning with two disappointing tournaments in Texas.
Bryson DeChambeau goes into the Masters on the back foot as he struggles with injuries
DeChambeau’s low-key press conference was a stark contrast to last year, where he was the centre of attention after claiming that the par for him at Augusta was more like 67 than 72 – and that he was going to drive the 445 yard uphill opening hole.
He finished with egg on his face in 46th place and has still to register a top 20 finish in five Masters appearances. ‘It’s been nice to go about my business without fuss,’ he claimed. ‘I might not be fully fit but it’s the Masters so I have to give it a go.’
DeChambeau will not be at full strength for the Masters which gets underway on Thursday and he will hope to still be in contention by the final day on Sunday.
The American is still not fully fit and struggled in two recent competitions held in Texas
