Bruins’ Jeremy Swayman to start over Linus Ullmark in Game 3 vs. Hurricanes

The Carolina Hurricanes jumped out to a 2-0 first-round playoff series lead over the Boston Bruins via Wednesday’s 5-2 home victory. With things shifting to Boston on Friday night, a Bruins side that has been outscored 10-3 over the past two contests is understandably making a change.

Per Patrick Donnelly of the NHL’s website, Bruins head coach Bruce Cassidy confirmed Thursday that 23-year-old goaltender Jeremy Swayman will start Game 3 over Linus Ullmark. Ullmark surrendered four goals on 24 shots in Game 1 and then allowed another four goals on 33 attempts on Wednesday evening.

Swayman, meanwhile, will be making his first career Stanley Cup playoffs start after he went 23-14-3 with a 2.41 goals-against average and .914 save percentage in 41 games and 39 starts during the 2021-22 regular season.

“Right now, I think Linus [Ullmark] has been fine,” Cassidy explained about the decision. “As I said after Game 1, I think we’ve got to do a better job at the other end, but if it ends up being one of those 2-1 games, we need a performance where we get that timely save to give the guys some life. That’s where we’re at right now. [Carolina is] scoring goals, and they’re not giving very many up. So there’s a little bit to do at both ends.”

Game 4 will take place Sunday afternoon in Boston.
