Brooklyn Nets guard Cam Thomas fined $40k for homophobic remark live on TV

Brooklyn Nets guard Cam Thomas fined $40,000 and apologizes for a homophobic remark live on TV after saying his team has ‘good-looking guys, no homo’ in a courtside interview

Nets guard Cam Thomas has been fined $40k by the NBA for ‘derogatory and disparaging language’ on Thursday night, the league announced.

Thomas said ‘no homo’ during a courtside TV interview after the team’s 116-105 win over the Bulls at the Barclays Center.

The remark came about when TNT’s Jared Greenberg asked Thomas about teammate Spencer Dinwiddie’s remarks from his (re)-introductory press conference with Brooklyn after being traded from the Mavericks.

Dinwiddie had joked that he and fellow new arrival Dorian Finney-Smith were not ‘the best trade package, but we’re the best looking, and the Nets needed some help in that department.’

Asked about Dinwiddie’s comments on Thursday, Thomas said, ‘I seen it but I was like, man, he just talking for the laughs. We already had good looking dudes, no homo.’

Not long after the game finished, at 10:34pm ET, Thomas posted an apology to his Twitter account.

‘I want to apologize for the insensitive word I used in the post-game interview. I was excited about the win and was being playful,’ he said.

‘I definitely didn’t intend to offend anyone, but realize that I probably did. My apologies again. Much love.’

Greenberg said ‘sure the league office will enjoy that one’ after Thomas’ remark, and his wry prediction proved correct.

Thomas is not the first NBA player to be fined for homophobic language.

In 2018, Nuggets center Nikola Jokic said that the Bulls’ Wendell Carter Jr. is ‘longer than you expect,’ but prefaced that comment by saying, ‘no homo.’

Jokic was fined $25k for the comment, while former Pacers center Roy Hibbert was fined the same amount for the same offense in 2013.
