The idea came to him during lockdown. “I started playing with cocktails in my kitchen because obviously we didn’t have many parties going on. I had so much fun coming up with recipes using exotic ingredients that I’d liked on travels to India, Rio, or you know, all over.” But while he was having fun making the cocktails, he recognized that most people probably would have more fun just drinking them. “These are drinks to drink when you want a mixologist-level cocktail—but don’t have the time to grind up the turmeric.” Just like with his parties, van Wyck has put in all the painstaking, behind-the-scenes work so you can seem like an effortless host upon serving.

So he partnered with creative entrepreneur Nick Bradley to make his lightbulb moment a business. Starting this week, they are available to order, and come fall, Dio will debut a line of mixers as well.

While the canned cocktail business is indeed a saturated one—Joe Jonas, Shay Mitchell, and Miles Teller are just some of the celebrities involved—van Wyck and Bradley believe Dio stands apart on a few counts. One is the quality of the drink, which is low sugar and non-GMO. The second is the intricacy of the ingredients. “You’re getting a sensory experience that is so much more complicated and nuanced,” van Wyck says. The third? There’s two drink servings per can.
