Brock Purdy stat proves he’s ready to take over for Jimmy Garoppolo full-time now
In one playoff game, Brock Purdy proved he is ready to take over for Jimmy Garoppolo full-time.
There is nothing irrelevant about Mr. Irrelevant, as the San Francisco 49ers are Brock Purdy’s team going forward.
After being one of the most criticized stars from the Big 12 over the last few seasons, Purdy has ascended to quarterbacking royalty in the Bay Area. The last pick of the 2022 NFL Draft has yet to lose a game as the 49ers’ starting quarterback. He took over for an injured Jimmy Garoppolo midseason. Right now, it feels like a 2001 San Francisco Odyssey. The 49ers are hotter than the sun!
In one playoff game, Purdy has thrown for as many touchdown passes as Garoppolo has in his entire 49ers postseason career: Four!
As no surprise, Garoppolo will need to find a new place to go play some quarterback at, probably over in the NFC South. There are starting jobs to be had over there for sure… As far as former No. 3 overall pick Trey Lance goes, 49ers general manager John Lynch needs to recoup some of that precious draft capital his franchise gave up to reach on the one-year wonder out of North Dakota State…
This is Purdy’s NFL franchise now, so the 49ers must take full advantage of striking gold with him.
San Francisco 49ers can give the reins to Brock Purdy over Jimmy Garoppolo now
Since Purdy is a seventh-round pick out of Iowa State, he is only making pennies on the dollar compared to some of his playoff quarterbacking brethren. He is under contract through the 2026 NFL season for just over $3 million over the next three years. Surely, the 49ers brass may renegotiate to fair market value in a year or two, but they have a Super Bowl window to go exploit.
As long as Kyle Shanahan remains the 49ers head coach, San Francisco will be a place where quarterbacks thrive. Clearly, he does not need a world-beater at the position to have continued success. While Purdy’s draft stock plummeted during a down final year in Ames for his standards, he could not have been drafted into a better situation. He can achieve all of his NFL dreams here.
By not having to pay out the wazoo for Purdy over the next three years, the 49ers’ front office can allocate financial resources towards building the best team around him. Rent will come due in a few years, but you can never overstate how big it is to hit pay dirt with a quarterback on his rookie contract. Hitting on one in the first round is ideal, but finding a gem in day three cannot be topped.
San Francisco should draft another day-three quarterback this spring, but it is Purdy’s team now.
