britain: PIO doctor found guilty of 54 sex crimes against 48 female patients over 35-year period in Britain – Times of India

LONDON: An India-born doctor who qualified in Bihar has been found guilty of 54 sex offences against 48 female patients in Britain.
Dr Krishna Ballabh Prasad Singh, 72, a maried father of three and grandfather, was found guilty by a jury at Glasgow high court on Thursday of numerous sexual offences, including sexual assault, against female patients, including minors, between 1983 and 2018. Singh, who was made an MBE in 2013 for services to healthcare, will be sentenced next month.
He completed his MBBS from Patna Medical College in 1974 and was registered to practice in Britain in 1976. The General Medical Council has suspended him.
Singh, from Airdrie, denied all the charges, claiming some of his examination techniques were what he had been taught during medical training in India.
Victims spoke about how he fondled their breasts, put his hand up their skirts, kissed them, conducted inappropriate examinations and made sleazy comments during medical appointments. The majority of offences took place at medical practices but he also assaulted patients on call outs and inside a police station. The women told the court they did not report him as he was a senior partner and his wife was the surgery practice manager. It was not until one woman, inspired by the “Me Too” movement, reported him in 2018 that police launched an investigation.
One woman described how Singh put his hand “right in” her bra when seeing him about shortness of breath. Another said that he commented her “breasts were getting bigger” and that “sex is the best drug”. Another relayed how he prodded her knicker line when she went to see him about a sore throat. One man told the court he threatened to punch Singh after catching him groping his pregnant wife’s breast.
Dr Ramesh Mehta, president of the British Association of Physicians of Indian Origin, said: “It is sad that an Indian-origin doctor was involved in these heinous acts. This is exceptional as Indian doctors are known for their sincerity and excellence in patient care. Doctors, by the nature of their profession, have some very unique privileges. Those are sacrosanct and must never be abused.”
