European rugby authorities remained uncertain on Monday night about whether the opening weekend of fixtures will go ahead in full — with doubts focused on the Bristol versus Scarlets tie.

The Anglo-Welsh encounter in Pool B of the Heineken Champions Cup is due to kick off at 5.30pm on Saturday at Ashton Gate, but there is speculation that the Scarlets will be unable to field a team.

The region’s coaches and playing squad are currently in quarantine in Belfast after fleeing South Africa last week when travel restrictions were being re-introduced.

They will not be free to return home until Friday.

A request by the Scarlets to postpone the game, amid health and safety concerns, has been rejected by organisers EPCR, who say fixtures will go ahead unless a side opts to forfeit.

In that event, the opposition will be awarded a 28-0 win.
