Brief Encounter • C|E Contemporary
A four-sided installation with black and white images will immerse the visitor in the longing analog world of Keef Charles, who tells us new stories of love and nostalgia for the past but also of hope, now as then, in a future without hate.
The artist’s narrative comes to life during historical re-enactments, in which he participates, almost as if he were a stage photographer, managing to enhance through the shots the madness of his countrymen who like to disguise themselves and interpret various moments of their history.
Keef’s shots depict real situations that look to the past but are conceptually open to contemporary reflections.
Aware that we are watching the staging of a past reality, brought to life in the gestures and expressions of the protagonists, we witness an acting that reminds us in our minds of an old David Lean film, Brief Encounter, in which the two protagonists meet and fall in love in a train station. But their love will not be consummated, and we viewers remain caught up in the artifice that nevertheless turns out to be as real as ever.
