Brett Favre biographer: Don’t buy my book amid alleged welfare scandal

Pro Football Hall of Famer Brett Favre earned an on-the-field reputation as a gunslinger willing to take risks. In October 2016, well-respected sports journalist and New York Times best-selling author Jeff Pearlman released his book on Favre entitled: “Gunslinger: The Remarkable, Improbable, Iconic Life of Brett Favre.”

Now Pearlman has advice for people who are considering buying the book:

Don’t.

Favre, a Pro Football Hall of Famer, was reportedly questioned by the FBI regarding an alleged welfare scandal involving a new volleyball center at the University of Southern Mississippi.

Earlier this week, reports surfaced claiming that texts allegedly show Favre worked with then-Mississippi governor Phil Bryant, among others, to divert at least $5 million of state welfare money to help build a volleyball center at Southern Mississippi. At the time, Favre’s daughter played the sport at the school.

Favre starred at Southern Mississippi from 1987-1990. He went on to star in the NFL for the Packers and Vikings and is widely considered one of the greatest QBs in NFL history.

Per an ESPN story, Favre’s attorney, Bud Holmes, denied the former quarterback knowingly received welfare funds as part of the alleged scam.

“Brett Favre has been honorable throughout this whole thing,” Holmes told Mississippi Today this week.
