Brentford B starlet Alex Gilbert turns down a new contract amid growing interest from Wolves, Nottingham Forest and Middlesbrough
- The captain of Brentford’s reserve side ended the season as their top goalscorer
- Gilbert has also attracted interest from clubs abroad but English move favoured
- Team-mate Romeo Beckham signed a new permanent deal with the side in June
Brentford forward Alex Gilbert has turned down the offer of a new contract and is set to leave.
The 21-year old was Brentford B team’s player of the year last season and top scorer with 16 goals as they went on to win the Premier League Cup.
Gilbert, a Republic of Ireland U21 international, joined the club from West Brom’s academy in 2020 and has broken into the first team on occasion – including an FA Cup appearance against Middlesbrough – but is looking for greater opportunities.
Those chances could come as Wolves, Nottingham Forest and Boro have all expressed interest in taking him as he prepares to depart.
He has clubs from abroad also keen to sign him on a low compensation deal, but there are hopes an accord can be found for around £1million with the English trio rather than having to go a tribunal.

Talks are expected to take place as Wolves, Forest and Boro all make their pitch to Brentford.
Wolves in particular will look to recruit heavily in the window as they greenlight a number of player sales, including the bumper £47million transfer of captain Ruben Neves to Saudi Arabian side Al-Hilal, and the potential loss of Conor Coady, who was loaned last season to Everton.
They have previously earmarked additional young talent in the form of Bristol City’s Alex Scott, who is being heavily tracked by a number of Premier League rivals.
The 19-year-old was named Championship Young Player of the Season for his work during City’s 2022-23 campaign, and since promotion to the senior squad, has made an impressive 89 appearances for the Robins.
