Brazilian football star Neymar fined $3.3 million. Here’s why

Brazilian football star Neymar has been fined 16 million reais, or $3.3 million, for breaking environmental regulations while building his coastal mansion on the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro. Brazilian authorities accused Neymar of violating the use and movement of fresh water sources, rock and sand during the construction of the luxury property. The Paris Saint-Germain star has 20 days to appeal against the fine imposed by the Brazilian authorities.

According to AFP, Neymar bought the 107,000 square metre Mangarabita mansion in 2016. The luxury mansion includes facilities such as a helipad, spa and gym.

A statement from the Mangaratiba City Council said the Brazilian footballer had been fined four times for “environmental violations in the construction of an artificial lake at the player’s mansion”.

The Brazilian authorities have cited Neymar for a number of offences, including carrying out work subject to environmental control without the proper permits, taking and diverting river water and removing land and suprression of vegetation.

The authorities were alerted to the matter following a number of complaints on social media against the luxury property. They found several environmental violations at the property, where workers were building an artificial lake and beach.

The coastal mansion was cordoned off by the authorities and all activities were ordered to cease. However, Neymar reportedly threw a party at the mansion and took a dip in the lake.

The Brazil star is recovering from surgery on his right ankle and has not played football since February. Meanwhile, doubts have also been cast over his continued stay at PSG, the club that signed him from Barcelona for €222 million in 2017. According to reports, Neymar could return to Barcelona this year.
