Boston Pride wins PHF Championship for two consecutive years

In an all-New England final Monday night, the Boston Pride won their second consecutive Isobel Cup, defeating the Connecticut Whale 4-2.

The Pride Goalie Katie Burt made 31 saves, and their captain Jillian Dempsey made a goal and an assist for the victory of the PHF Championship. The Pride team had one goal deficit which they overcame with goals 18 seconds apart for good midway through the third period to take the lead.

Evelina Raselli took advantage of a rebound at the edge of the crease to tie the game at two apiece at 6:39 of the third. Next, the Pride got to the net again, where Taylor Wenczkowski hit a rebound past Abby Ives, the Connecticut netminder, which made for a goal from the open left side of Ives.

Boston Pride became the first team in the Premier Hockey Federation to win back-to-back championships. The Pride team topped the Minnesota Whitecaps in 2021 for their second title. Boston also won in the inaugural season of the league, when it was known as the National Women’s Hockey League in 2016.

In the opening round on Friday, the Premier Hockey Federation’s No. 3 seed Boston Pride bested the No. 6 seed Buffalo Beauts at 6-0. They downed the second-seeded Toronto Six on Sunday at 5-1.

Boston’s success in the tournament was fueled by a revitalized power play. And they benefited from goalkeeper Katie Burt’s continued saves. After finishing last in the league at 6% (4 of 66), the Pride converted 50% (5 of 10) in the playoffs.

In three postseason games, Burt allowed just three goals on 85 shots, with a 1.41 goals-against average and .958 save percentage during the regular season. Boston’s Jenna Rheault also scored, leading the team to victory. And Taylor Girard and Amanda Conway tallied goals for the Whale. The MVP of the playoffs was Taylor Wenczkowski.
