Bosco Martis: Shah Rukh Khan was fully committed to Jhoome Jo Pathaan despite having knee issues – Exclusive – Times of India

Choreographer Bosco Martis can’t stop praising Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone for their efforts in the Pathaan song Jhoome Jo Pathaan. Recalling his first association with SRK, Bosco said, “Our first song was Yeh Taara Woh Taara from Swades. There was one hook step which was a cute little move. The song has become popular among all age groups. We did songs in Raees and Zero. But in Pathaan, we got to do a dance song after a long time.”

Bosco’s choreography on Jhoome Jo Pathaan has been hailed as contemporary and colourful. In an exclusive chat with ETimes, he reveals all that went into creating this song and he also looks back at his long and fruitful association with SRK. Read on…

‘SRK is extremely responsible and committed’

The kind of energy and commitment he puts in is amazing. In Spain, there were only 2-3 days for rehearsals. He used to come and rehearse after his pack-up. He’d rehearse till 1.30 at night. He knows that this is a big one. He knows the kind of effort and money that has gone in. He’s extremely responsible that way.

There was a request for a body shot. That way he is very shy when it comes to body shots. We were lucky to have the right song for it. So, I thought this is the right time to milk this opportunity. The Pathaan song has been received well. Reels are being made across the world. It feels nice to see the response.

‘Yeh Taara Woh Taara from Swades was a tough shoot’

While choreographing most of the songs with Khan saab, I have not got the songs, or the song is made on set, sometimes, the moves were shot on another song, and then we had to recreate the song.

Yeh Taara Woh Taara from Swades took us 7-8 days to shoot because of the storytelling through the song. The song was a short story. And back then we had just started our journey. It really helped us as choreographers to get that kind of guidance from Ashu (Ashutosh Gowariker) and Shah Rukh sir. We didn’t work together after that for a very long time.

‘Pathaan’s songs are very stylish’

Once the director approves the moves, we show them to the actor. Then we show it to assistants and dancers. Then the treatment follows. It’s how we look at the styling of the whole song. This song has come out very stylish.

We worked with Deepika first in Love Aaj Kal. We won our first Filmfare Award for the Chor Bazaari song from that film. She has been a lucky mascot for us. We have worked with her on and off.

The Pathaan song is very stylish and cool. The moves played for their age. It was not over the top. These moves were not scientifically planned. We just thought that these moves would look good on them. And because both of them were so well rehearsed, there were not many retakes. It was a pleasure working with Khan saab and Deepika. Especially, SRK because I am seeing him dance after a very long time and took a picture with him, too. It made me feel so special.

‘SRK did everything to make us happy’

Even if he is in pain, SRK will not let you know. He will do his job as if it is supposed to be done. He definitely has knee issues. But if you see the moves in the song, all are leg movements. So, it’s not easy. But he told us to carry on with the shoot and not worry about what he was going through. He did not compromise and did what was needed. He did everything that made Siddharth Anand and I happy to the best of his abilities. That really touched me.
