BMC to open only one-way traffic on Coastal Road route
The Coastal Road route between Marine Lines and Worly, designed to alleviate congestion in the city’s existing road network, is likely to be opened by December but only one side of it is likely to be opened first, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said on Sunday. Only one-way traffic on the Coastal Road route will be opened in December as the work on the second tunnel is still underway.
According to a report in Mid-Day, the routes to connect the Coastal Road to Bandra-Worli Sea Link and few interchanges at Worli and Haji Ali will be completed in some time. The entire project, which started in December 2019, is likely to be over by June 2025.
“We are looking at options to optimise use of the completed structures of the road. One tunnel will be ready and so the south-to-north (Marine Lines to Worli up to JK Kapur Chowk) traffic may start in December 2023. We are also looking to open up a few other stretches on north-to-south roads, but this decision will be taken later,” a BMC official was quoted as saying by the report.
The project stared in December 2018 and the route between Marine Lines and Worli was supposed to be launched by November this year. Despite the work being carried out even during the lockdown period, the BMC has now said that only one way of the stretch would be made operational. The he Bandra-Worli Sea Link connector and some other routes will be made operational by May 2024.
What delayed the project? Several issues such as a Supreme Court battle and a damage in the tunnel boring machine delayed the project.
The ongoing Coastal Road Project in Mumbai is poised to have a significant impact on the connectivity between Mumbai and Alibaug. The coastal freeway will not only reduce travel time but also provide a scenic and comfortable commute for residents, tourists, and investors heading to Alibaug.
