If there’s one great beauty signifier of the Noughties, it’s an unapologetic wash of fluorescent glitter. Blumarine took this nostalgic visual cue to the extreme at today’s show in Milan, where bodies and manes of hair alike were agleam above flowing ruffle tops, low-rise denim cut-offs, and embellished butterfly belts.
In a nod to sultry Y2K beauty, “sexy, juicy, sun-kissed skin,” as makeup artist Inge Grognard called it, was enhanced with slicks of transparent MAC Lipglass on the lips and lids to light-catching effect. Even T-zones were shimmering, with Grognard blending in a few drops of “pearly glow” courtesy of Nyx liquid highlighter along the forehead and bridge of the nose for a touch of unexpected, light-reflecting shine. To give each model a twinkling, full-body veil, Grognard mixed loose MAC pearlescent glitter with lustrous body oils from Tom Ford and Anastasia Beverly Hills, brushing the sparkling pigments along the décolletage, shoulders, and down the arms. “It’s like they’re little diamonds dancing around the skin as they walk and move to the music,” said Grognard with a laugh.
Mirroring the makeup were prismatic, glitter-brushed manes crafted by hairstylist Anthony Turner. They, too, flashed and flickered under the runway lights, giving each model an ethereal, almost hologram-like glow as they strut down the runway. From last season’s crystal butterfly adornments to this one’s no-holds-barred embrace of glitter, the Y2K redux is out in full force, head to toe. No doubt Gen Z is watching—and readying their pots of glitter.
