Blue Jays move Espinal to IL, recall Lopez from triple-A Buffalo
The Toronto Blue Jays have moved infielder Santiago Espinal to the 10-day injured list with right hamstring inflammation, retroactive to May 21.
Espinal suffered the injury in Saturday’s loss to the Orioles and had to be lifted from the game. He is hitting .205/.266/.274 with one home run in 25 games this season.
In place of Espinal, the Blue Jays activated infielder Otto Lopez ahead of Monday’s series opener against the Tampa Bay Rays. Lopez appeared in eight MLB games with the Blue Jays last season and will replace Espinal as the team’s back up shortstop for the time being.
You can watch Chris Bassitt and the Blue Jays face the Rays Monday night on Sportsnet ONE and SN NOW beginning at 6:40 p.m. ET/ 3:40 p.m. PT.
