Blood moon eclipse to break 600-year record
The longest partial lunar eclipse in 600 years is set to light up the sky tonight, with the moon set to take on a particularly ghostly turn.
In what will be the longest partial lunar eclipse of this century, tonight’s full moon will take on a blood-tinged glow.
Dubbed as the ‘blood moon eclipse,’ this happens when the sun, Earth and a full-moon are exactly, or very closely aligned. However, since the Earth’s shadow will slightly obstruct the moon, tonight’s eclipse will only be a ‘partial eclipse’.
Lasting three hours, 28 minutes and 23 seconds, it’ll be the lengthiest partial lunar eclipse since 1440. Unfortunately, Australians won’t be able to view all of it, and what we see might be more pink than red, as the eclipse will have already started before the moon has risen.
Down under sky gazers should aim to get a peek in the early evening, shortly after the sky fully darkens, so it doesn’t obstruct the moon’s glow. But be quick because the eclipse will be over by 9.47pm AEDT.
According to the ABC, the eclipse set to reach its maximum at 8.03pm in Sydney and Canberra. While people in Brisbane, Adelaide and Darwin will miss the maximum, you’ll still be able to view the partial eclipse as soon as it’s dark enough to do so. Unfortunately, people in WA will almost miss out on the partial lunar eclipse entirely, do to the time zone.
Elsewhere, people from the United States, South America, North and West Africa and some parts of Asia will also be privy to this lunar event.
‘Bite your tongue’: Relationships in trouble
For those who believe in astrology, experts have warned the lunar eclipse could cause “cosmic chaos”.
According to Melbourne astrologer Janelle Palibrk, Taurus and Scorpios could be particularly affected, however all the signs might “feeling out of sorts”.
“In short, it might be best to just hold your tongue for a few days to assess if something is really with the argument,” she previously told news.com.au.
Ms Palibrk predicted that Tauruses could feel especially challenged, while Scorpios might be extra sensitive right now.
“If you are a Taurus, you might have a self-identity crisis that could translate to your relationship,” she said.
“(For Scorpios) my advice is to take some time to mull over the situation before speaking out. The energy from the lunar eclipse can be chaotic and you might regret speaking your mind at the time.”
