Blackpool manager Mick McCarthy and his assistant Terry Connor have the left the club by mutual consent.

The decision comes off the back of a 3-1 defeat at home by Cardiff on Friday, with Blackpool in danger of relegation from the Championship.

With six games remaining, Blackpool are seven points adrift of safety and have struggled for results recently. McCarthy was only appointed in January but has now departed the club. 

McCarthy told Blackpool’s official website: ‘After recent performances and results, I have thought long and hard and feel this is the best decision for everyone concerned with the football club.

‘I’ve loved my time here and thank everyone for their support. I wish everyone well going forward.’

A statement on the club’s official website said: ‘Blackpool Football Club can confirm Mick McCarthy and Terry Connor have both left the club by mutual consent.

‘With results on the pitch not improving in recent weeks, the decision has been agreed by both parties that a change is needed.

‘The club would like to thank both Mick and Terry for their efforts and wish them well for the future.’

Former Blackpool player Stephen Dobbie will be in charge of the club for the rest of the season and will be supported by assistants Matt Blinkhorn and Steve Banks.

McCarthy won just two of his 14 matches as Blackpool manager, drawing three and losing nine.

He was given a short term contract until the end of the season after replacing Michael Appleton. 

Blackpool are back in action on Monday when they face Luton away.

They will then finish the campaign with games against Wigan, West Brom, Birmingham, Millwall and Norwich. 

During a lengthy managerial career McCarthy has had spells in charge of various clubs including Sunderland, Wolves and Ipswich as well two stints as Republic of Ireland manager.
