Manuel Benson’s superb goal finally secured the Championship title for Burnley in a feisty East Lancashire derby last night.
Since clinching automatic promotion on April 7, Vincent Kompany’s runaway leaders have had been forced to put their title celebrations on hold after being held to two draws before a shock first home defeat of the season to QPR at the weekend.
But the dream scenario for many of their fans of lifting the title at the home of their local rivals — while also denting Blackburn’s play-off hopes — was realised when substitute Benson produced a finish of real quality in the 66th minute.
He had only been on the pitch eight minutes when he ran down the right flank, cut inside and curled a left-footed shot into the far corner of the net.
There was plenty of good approach play from both teams but no end product before Benson’s strike.

A run of six games without a win had left Rovers out of the top six and ensured this was a game they could not afford to lose. A point would have lifted them back into the top six.
Hayden Carter produced a super last-ditch tackle to prevent Anass Zaroury from giving the Clarets an early lead.
Rovers looked threatening, particularly from set-pieces. Joe Rankin-Costello headed wide, Sammie Szmodics saw his shot deflected just over the bar while Dominic Hyam fired straight at goalkeeper Arijanet Muric.
Jon Dahl Tomasson’s side started the second half looking the more likely winners, until they were rocked by Benson’s stunner.
