BJP pushes ahead with Uniform Civil Code, organises campaigns, yatras

From a Union minister doing Kanwar yatra with Uniform Civil Code (UCC) as its theme to a state unit launching a special campaign on the same, the BJP and its leaders are going the extra mile keep the focus on the code in the run up to 2024 polls.

Union Minister Sanjeev Balyan will do Kanwar yatra starting on June 11 from Haridwar where he is expected to be joined by the Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami with UCC as its theme.

“My Kanwar yatra will start from Haridwar with the theme of Uniform Civil Code and that is also my prayer from Lord Shiva for doing this yatra to get UCC law drafted in the near future,” Balyan told ET. His yatra will conclude in Muzaffarnagar, from where he is an MP and during its course BJP’s Uttar Pradesh unit chief Bhupendra Chaudhary will also join him.

Balyan further said he would walk, eat and stay with Kanwadiyas and make them aware about the UCC, and request them to spread the word about this landmark legislation in the entire country.

Similarly, BJP’s Kerala unit has planned to launch a statewide campaign to counter the ruling government on the UCC. The party’s leaders from Kerala will travel across the state to address the apprehensions about this proposed law.

Besides this, an informal GoM has also been formed for UCC, comprises of Union Ministers Kiren Rijiju (a tribal and party’s north-eastern face), Smriti Irani (holding charge of women and minority affairs ministries), Arjun Ram Meghwal (a SC by caste and Law Minister) and G Kishan Reddy (BJP’s face from south India). It has been assigned to work on UCC and how apprehensions around it could be addressed as the GoM represents almost all those segments which this proposed legislation will impact. The BJP’ government in Uttarakhand is already in the final stages of coming up with its own UCC code.
