Billie Eilish Does Retro Barbie Beauty for Her New Music Video
Billie Eilish is a fan of moody beauty. Though the pop star enjoyed an extended stint as a bleached blonde, she’s favored raven lengths for more than a year now—all the better to augment her grunge-girl selfies and oversized ensembles. But, if this year has taught us anything, it’s that there is a little Barbie within us all. This morning, Eilish released the music video for “What Was I Made For?” from the Barbie movie soundtrack, and made her way into the Barbie universe with a stylish ode to the original 1959 doll.
The visual features Eilish in a buttery button-front dress and matching Mary Janes. But the standout element of her look was the high-slung, voluminous blonde ponytail and sculptural bangs that resembled a pinned-on pastry. Throughout the video, Eilish unpacks miniature versions of her most iconic outfits, hanging them on a tiny rolling rack as a storm swirls around her.
The theme of both video and song is in keeping with Eilish’s recent comments about growing up and test-driving versions of herself—and the unwarranted scrutiny that comes with that. “I don’t need to always prove to everyone that I’m a tomboy,” she told Vogue in June. “Like, that is what I am, but I also am this kind of girl. I’m also feminine, and I’m also sexy, and I’m also cute, and I’m also just like, none of the above, and I’m just me.”
