Billie Eilish Brought Bratz Doll Energy to the Barbie Premiere
Billie Eilish has rejected the girly glamour of Barbieland in favor of something a little closer to her rockstar roots. The 21-year-old singer attended the world premiere of the highly anticipated Barbie film in an outfit that she told Variety was, “more of a Ken thing.” It also reminded us, more than a little bit, of Bratz dolls.
In a nod to the film, and the omnipresent Barbiecore trend, Eilish donned a pink-heavy look styled by Lana Jay Lackey. But in her roomy pinstriped Gucci button-down and magenta tie, black Raf Simmons shorts, and oversized ERL sneakers, she could have been a member of the Bratz Rock Angelz. She’s certainly edgy enough, while Barbie is more sweet.
A doll is nothing without her accessories, and Eilish came with plenty of reinforcements. She toted a bubblegum pink Vivienne Westwood bag, which she proudly held up for the cameras. On nearly every finger she sported chunky silver rings, and peeking out from her baggy pants were baby pink socks scrunched around her calves. And as it may have been too hot in the Los Angeles afternoon sun, Eilish carried a Raf Simmons sweater vest, emblazoned with a hot pink “B.”
Eilish promises her song on the Barbie soundtrack “What Was I Made For,” will make listeners sob. Producer Mark Ronson told Variety that director Greta Gerwig called him after they received Eilish’s track. “Is this shit incredible or what?” he said, to which she responded “I’m bawling.”
