Bihar bridge collapse: CM Nitish Kumar says ‘construction faulty…’
Bihar CM Nitish Kumar on Monday said that the bridge that collapsed yesterday in Bhagalpur was not constructed properly, ‘it had collapsed last year also’. He assured that the state government will look into the matter and strict action will be taken.
While speaking to the media, he said, “The bridge that collapsed yesterday had collapsed last year also. I have instructed officials to take strict action. It is not being constructed correctly that’s why it is collapsing again & again. The department will look into it & action will be taken.”
An under-construction bridge over the Ganga river collapsed in Bihar on Sunday, portions of which were deliberately destroyed in a planned fashion under expert advice as it had design flaws, claimed state government officials. The bridge was supposed to connect Khagaria district with Bhagalpur.
Soon after the collapse of the bridge, CM Nitish Kumar ordered a probe into it and asked the officials to identify those responsible for the incident.
Images of the bridge collapse that took place in Khagaria evoked immediate criticisms from the opposition, prompting Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Yadav and Additional Chief Secretary of Road Construction Department, Pratyay Amrit, to hold a hurried press conference.
“It may be recalled that a portion of this bridge had collapsed on April 30 last year. We had, thereafter, approached IIT-Roorkee, which is esteemed for its expertise in construction matters, to conduct a study. It is yet to come up with a final report but experts who had studied the structure had informed us that there were serious defects,” Yadav said at the press conference.
eader of Opposition in Bihar Vijay Kumar Sinha said that the under-construction Aguwani-Sultanganj bridge which collapsed in Bhagalpur is a consequence of Chief Minister’s Nitish Kumar mentality of political instability which has resulted in administrative anarchy and corruption in the state.
While speaking to ANI, Vijay Kumar Sinha said,”There is a tradition of seeking commission (bribe) in this government. It is a consequence of Bihar CM Nitish Kumar mentality of political instability that there’s administrative anarchy and corruption. System is collapsing but they are talking about Opposition unity.”
He further stated that there should be an immediate enquiry into the incident.
“There needs to be accountabilty in this incident. Those involved in corruption in the government have fixed their commissions. Where is your zero tolerance on the corruption?” he said.
