Big boost for Bangladesh as star player returns to squad for Asia Cup Super-4 stage
Bangladesh virtually secured their qualification for the next stage with an impressive 89-run victory over Afghanistan on Sunday.
Bangladesh batsman Litton Das has rejoined the Bangladesh team for the Super 4 stage of the Asia Cup 2023 after recovering from viral fever.
Previously, Das was unable to join the squad in Sri Lanka for the tournament opener due to his illness. However, after receiving a clearance certificate from the medical team, the wicketkeeper-batsman will now join the squad for the Super 4 stage of the tournament, as confirmed by the ICC.
Bangladesh virtually secured their qualification for the next stage with an impressive 89-run victory over Afghanistan on Sunday. In the absence of Das, Mehidy Hasan Miraz stepped up to the top of the order and delivered a memorable century. Unless Afghanistan manages to defeat Sri Lanka by a significant margin to improve their extremely poor net run rate of -1.780, it is highly likely that Bangladesh and Sri Lanka will qualify from Group B.
Although the Tigers suffered a defeat in their opening match against Sri Lanka, their triumph over Afghanistan has secured their spot in the Super 4 stage.
“The Asia Cup squad has a few injury concerns and the team management felt the need for an additional player going into the Super Four,” the Bangladesh Cricket Board selection panel Chairman Minhajul Abedin said as quoted by ICC.
“We have received the BCB Medical Team’s clearance regarding Litton’s health and have decided to send him to Pakistan.”
It will be intriguing to witness how Bangladesh reorganizes their batting order with the return of Das. In the previous match against Afghanistan, Mehidy and Mohammad Naim were assigned as openers after Tanzid Hasan failed to score any runs in the opening game.
Furthermore, Najmul Hossain Shanto has been in excellent form, scoring a century in the Afghanistan fixture while batting at No.3. If Das returns to the top of the order, it is likely that Mehidy will be shifted back to his usual batting position lower down the order.
