Bengal’s revered ‘One Rupee Doctor’ Sushovan Banerjee passes away – Times of India
He has been treating people for just one rupee and is fondly known as “Ek Takar Daktar”.
In the year 2020, he received the highest civilian honour of the country: the Padma Shri. The same year his name was recorded in the Guinness World Records for treating the maximum number of patients.
Expressing grief over the death of the renowned personality, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee took to microblogging platform Twitter. “Sad to know of the demise of benevolent doctor Sushovan Bandyopadhyay. The famed one-rupee-doctor of Birbhum was known for his public-spirited philanthropy, and I express my sincerest condolences,” the CM wrote.

As per news reports, it was only during the COVID pandemic he had to shut down his clinic for a few days else he never denied serving people. Soon after the pandemic he resumed his medical service.
His free-spirited nature and dedication towards serving people has been cited in several reports. In 2019 when doctors across the state were on strike protesting against the attack on a junior doctor, Dr Banerjee did not stop the medical services. ‘I do not support attacks on doctors in any way. But I don’t support the doctors’ strike either. The path of protest should be different. Because desperate patients hold the doctor’s hand to save their lives,’ he had said then.
His cordial relationship with former President of India Pranab Mukherjee is known to all. “Mr Mukherjee sees me as his younger brother. He had called me up to congratulate me Saturday evening. I told him that when one brother is a Bharat Ratna, then another should also get something,” he told media after receiving the Padma Shri.
