Bayern Munich, Manchester City to play at Packers’ Lambeau Field this summer
Lambeau Field, home of the Green Bay Packers, is arguably the most historic standing NFL site in the United States but will host a different type of football game this summer.
As noted by Reuters (h/t ESPN), German giants Bayern Munich and reigning English Premier League champions Manchester City will play an exhibition match at Lambeau Field on July 23. This will be the first soccer match held at the venue.
Bayern made history last month by securing a remarkable 10th consecutive Bundesliga title. City finished the 2020-21 season atop the table for the English top flight and currently lead the league with 83 points, one more than second-place Liverpool have at the start of May.
“We are looking forward to hosting a different kind of football at Lambeau Field this summer as we welcome FC Bayern Munich and Manchester City to Green Bay,” Packers president and CEO Mark Murphy said for a statement released on the Manchester City website. “Our home stadium is renowned for its history and tradition, and we’re honoured to host two equally historic clubs from across the pond. We’re looking forward to seeing their devoted supporters from around the world attend Lambeau Field’s debut soccer match.”
City will also face Mexico’s Club America in Houston on July 20, while Bayern will play against Major League Soccer club D.C. United in Washington, D.C. that same day.
