JOHANNESBURG – Netflix has released the original Shaka Zulu film ahead of the release of Shaka iLembe on 18 June on Mzansi Magic.
Shaka Zulu follows Shaka kaSenzangakhona, a Zulu leader during the early 1800s, as he encounters the British empire in this historical miniseries.
Netflix tweeted, “Bayede!!! I just wanted to let you know that Shaka Zulu is now streaming on Netflix.”

Through bloody civil wars, Shaka Zulu’s rise to power in Africa and the expansion of England’s colonies saw a new nation being formed. His fight for freedom is marked by courage, action, and heart.
Shaka Zulu’s younger half-brother Sigujana became king of the Zulu chiefdom after Senzangakhona (Shaka Zulu’s father) died in 1816. Dingiswayo lent Shaka a regiment to execute Sigujana, launching a relatively bloodless coup that was widely accepted by the Zulu people despite Sigujana’s short reign.
The Shaka Zulu season 1 has at least 10 episodes and stars Edward Fox, Robert Powell, and Trevor Howard.
Netflix tweeters had mixed reactions, with some saying they could not wait to watch the new Shaka iLembe, while others said they were happy with the old one.
