In his first big innings since April one young Test star showed ominous form ahead of the Ashes while a veteran continued to add to his legacy.
Test tyro Cameron Green made an early Ashes statement with a huge hundred combining with evergreen Shaun Marsh to pile more misery on South Australia as the Sheffield Shield season began on Friday.
A Covid-enforced fixture reshuffle sent Western Australia to Adelaide and Green picked up where he left off last summer, which included his elevation to Test regular, playing all four matches against India and earning a Cricket Australia contract.
Green, 22, was also the leading run-scorer in the Shield last season and continued to show his domestic domination scoring 106 on the opening day against South Australia.
It was Green’s third hundred from his past four Shield games, including closing out last season with a remarkable 251 against Queensland.
At one stage he smashed SA leg-spinner Lloyd Pope for consecutive sixes to bring up his half-century.
The innings was made more remarkable by the fact Green had endured a stop-start pre-season, having to do two weeks home quarantine after a camp with the Australian squad in Brisbane.
“He also got sick and spent a week and a half at home,” WA coach Adam Voges told cricket.com this week.
“But around those things, he‘s trained really strongly, scored a hundred in a practice game and has done some really good work with his bowling.”
Green rode on the back of his captain, Marsh, who made his 32nd first class hundred at the ripe old age of 38, eventually dismissed for 118 as SA recruit Nathan McAndrew put the second new ball to good use.
On debut for the Redbacks, McAndrew snared three of the three wickets to fall as WA pushed past 300.
Last summer Marsh declared his international ambitions were over but committed to helping guide the WA side this season. He started by making just one in the one-day game against SA on Wednesday, before pounding out another triple-figure score against SA.
Between them Green and Marsh struck 25 fours and six sixes in a 199-run partnership, ended when Green was dismissed in the final session.
Marsh was out out not long after as the WA run-feast continued a horror stretch for SA who haven’t won a Sheffield Shield or domestic one-day game since February 2020.
Spinners Pope and Sam Kerber came in for special punishment, whacked for 83 runs from their combined 13 overs.
