- Josh Windass clinched promotion in the 123rd minute with a brilliant header
Sheffield Wednesday have been promoted to the Championship after Josh Windass’ extra time header sealed a hard-fought 1-0 victory over 10-men Barnsley at Wembley.
A frantic start to proceedings saw chances for either side fail to cause significant concern as Dominic Iorfa’s tame close-range effort was followed up by Barnsely winger Nicky Cadden smashing an effort from distance over the bar.
A cagey first-half lacked quality with Wednesday appearing to either over or underhit every cross that they looked to threaten with, while Barnsley enjoyed the lions share of possession but failed to do much with it.
An end-to-end firecracker of a second-half started with a sending off that saw Michael Duff’s side reduced to 10-men as Tim Robinson gave Adam Phillips his marching orders.
The Barnsley midfielder slid into a challenge on Lee Gregory and although it was reckless didn’t appear dangerous but a straight red card followed. VAR looked at it but ruled no further action needed to be taken.
The Tykes rallied and almost found themselves in-front just minutes later as Cadden’s speculative effort took a wicked deflection and rattled the crossbar.

Wednesday responded through Barry Bannan and Michael Smith but neither mustered a dangerous enough effort to test Harry Isted betwen the Barnsley sticks.
Extra time followed and Isted was now called upon, first denying Michael Smith with a world class stop before then tipping Bannan’s effort onto the post.
Luca Connell was then presented with a chance to write himself into Barnsley folklore but lacked the legs to carry him through as he pulled a great chance wide when one-v-one with the keeper.
The match looked set for penalties before Josh Windass popped up with the winning goal in the 123rd minute as his diving header beat Isted to seal promotion for Sheffield Wednesday.
