Barcelona have reportedly agreed a two-year contract worth £11million a season with Chelsea captain Cesar Azpilicueta.

Azpilicueta came close to leaving the Blues on a free transfer last summer before penning a new one-year extension, but could now depart Stamford Bridge after a decade at the club.

The Spanish defender looks set to follow fellow Chelsea defenders Antonio Rudiger and Andres Christensen out of the exit door this summer – leaving boss Thomas Tuchel with a tough task of rebuilding his defence.

It is has been reported by AS that the 32-year-old has agreed a two-year contract with a fixed salary of £11m (13m euros) for each campaign.

The contract includes the possibility of a one-year contract extension at the Catalan giants.

Chelsea have, however, confirmed that terms have been agreed for Todd Boehly to complete his £4.25billion takeover of the club.

Boehly’s consortium was named as the preferred bidder to take over at Stamford Bridge by the Raine Group, the American bank who are overseeing the sale. He has partnered with fellow Dodgers owner Mark Walter, Swiss billionaire Hansjorg Wyss as well as investment firm Clearlake Capital.

Boehly saw off competition from consortiums fronted by Stephen Pagliuca and Sir Martin Broughton and even a late £4.25bn bid from Britain’s richest man Sir Jim Ratcliffe.

Azpilicueta was waiting for this decision to sit down with the club and undertake his dismissal, after Chelsea was forced to activate the unilateral option to extend the contract that ended in June.

According to Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo, this occurred just before the UK government imposed heavy sanctions on Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich for his links to warmongering Russian president Vladimir Putin after the invasion of Ukraine.

Though Azpilicueta’s contract extension removes the risk of him walking away for nothing in the summer while the club remain under sanctions, he may leave the club anyway.

Mundo’s report stresses that Spain international Azpilicueta remains a primary target for Barcelona and they will enter into negotiations with Chelsea’s new owners to buy him if necessary.

Blues boss Thomas Tuchel recently insisted he expects the Spaniard to stay at the club.

The German said: ‘I knew it was going to happen, because I knew the amount of games. It’s a good thing. It’s good news for us.

‘[There is a] Very high probability that he will stay.’

Azpilicueta has won the Champions League, Europa League, Premier League, FA Cup, EFL Cup and Club World Cup during his decade at Chelsea, registering 16 goals and 56 assists from 463 games in all competitions
